This map covers January 2018 to August 2025, where the event data ends. Across those 92 months, 86 carried at least one recorded event. Six did not. Violence reached 204 distinct places, and 30 of them were struck in three separate years or more. The large markers are the documented massacres; they sit on a continuous field, not on empty ground.
The hatched band is not a period of calm. It is the thirteen months this ACLED export does not cover, and the violence continued through it. On 29 August 2026 an appeal reported killings, church destruction and some fifteen thousand people displaced around Gida Ayana in East Wollega; in the first days of September 2026, armed regional units and allied militias were reported to have opened fire on homes in Village 17, Hawa Gelan district, Kellem Wollega — the same district struck in July 2022. These reports are not yet corroborated and are not counted in any figure on this page. The band will be filled when a complete export is drawn.
Blank areas on this map are not safe areas. They are areas with no recorded event, which most often means no reporter was present. Only 540 of the 1,273 events carry exact coordinates; 727 are placed at the nearest town. Kellem Wollega, the least covered zone, is also the least precisely located, with 35 per cent of its events exactly placed against 48 per cent in East Wollega. The gaps in this map are part of what it documents.
The nominal register is deliberately not mapped. More than 1,400 individuals have been recorded by name. Placing them at village level would identify where their surviving families live, in an area where the violence continues. Named totals will be shown at woreda level only, once the register carries a published method note. Precise records are held for judicial and institutional use, not for open publication.
Circle area follows recorded fatalities; colour follows the severity scale used throughout this report. Counts are ACLED, export of 3 September 2026, and are a floor, not an estimate of the dead. Each massacre marker names the organisation that reported it and links to its report where that link has been verified; where it has not, the marker says so rather than implying a citation that does not exist.
