# Wollega ACLED extract, 2018 to August 2025: query, codebook and checksum

Source: Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), https://acleddata.com.

## Status of the data
The four-zone extract used in the report "Wollega: an ongoing erasure" (1,273 rows) was drawn under a research licence held by AAGE. ACLED's terms do not allow redistribution of the underlying rows, so the extract is NOT published here. What is published is everything a licensed researcher needs to draw the same extract and check every figure in the report, and a checksum of the file we used.

## Query (to reproduce the extract)
- Data export tool, country = Ethiopia; event_date from 2018-01-01 to 2026-09-03; all event types; export drawn on 3 September 2026. A second export drawn on 5 September 2026 reproduced both headline figures exactly.
- The export tool caps at 12,000 rows; the national file returned 11,999 rows ending 3 September 2025. The truncation removed the most recent rows (September 2025 onward), not the oldest. The figures therefore cover January 2018 to August 2025 and nothing beyond.
- Filter: admin2 is one of East Wellega, West Wellega, Horo Gudru Wellega, Kellem Wollega (ACLED spellings). Result: 1,273 rows, 2018-01-01 to 2025-08-31, sorted by event_date, admin2, location. No row edited; no column removed.
- SHA-256 of the CSV file AAGE holds: ce93e7ded97c3ea81c4a3ca38ec629a0be0b5f6367470dedc130db43f5fa4a12
(a researcher's own export will match only if the same rows, columns and ordering are used; the value allows AAGE to show that the file behind the report is the file described here).

## Figures in the report and how each is derived
- 4,646 = sum of `fatalities`, all rows.
- 1,997 = sum of `fatalities` where `event_type` == "Violence against civilians" (539 events). In the report this is always worded: reported civilian fatalities in events ACLED codes as violence against civilians.
- 204 = distinct (latitude, longitude) pairs, all rows. Distinct `location` names: 200.
- 30 = `location` values with "Violence against civilians" events in three or more distinct calendar years.
- 1,303 = sum of `fatalities` across all "Violence against civilians" events at those 30 places.
- Yearly totals shown on the part-IV plate (sum of `fatalities`, all rows): 2018 140; 2019 25; 2020 241; 2021 789; 2022 1,890; 2023 416; 2024 876; 2025 (January to August) 269.

## What the figures are not
ACLED `fatalities` are reported estimates coded from sources; ACLED does not independently verify them and does not record victim ethnicity. All figures are floors, not estimates of total deaths.
